Yukio Utada Shihan, chief instructor of Doshinkan Aikido International and the Aikido Association of North America, will be visiting Davis the weekend of September 15th to offer instruction in Doshin Buki Sojyutsu (Doshinkan weapons instruction) and Doshinkan Aikido.

I realize that we made a congrats in our the facebook group, but not here in our blog. Congratulations to all Winter quarter kyu rank contenders! Everyone did an excellent job during testing, and over the weeks preceding testing. Utada Kancho’s message and motto for the year is “unshakeable mind”, so let’s take what we’ve learned during this period and step forward with an unshakeable mind to advance our training. OSU

Stop by the martial arts studio at the ARC this week for Try Before You Buy! Aikido class is being held at the normal times: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:30p to 8p. As with last quarter, we have two sections: the Monday/Wednesday section, and the Friday section. Come try Aikido! For continuing students, we will begin a new course of training this week, so come by to start the quarter on the right foot (then left foot, then shite uke change, Hajime!)

Today we introduced our new students to kamaemi no kamae, tai sabaki, 95 degree pivot, and kotegaeshi. We also covered back breakfall #1. We then studied kotegaeshi from a few different perspectives, including one-hand grasp, both-hands grasp, and cross-hand grasp. Stay tuned for more kotegaeshi this week!

Join us for the 2011 Fall Quarter Try Before You Buy at the ARC!! Come to the Martial Arts Studio at the UC Davis Activities and Recreation Center for a free Aikido class on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:30p to 8p during the week of September 26th! We will hold two sections of Aikido through Fitness and Wellness during Fall 2011. Section 1 will be Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:30p to 8p, and Section 2 will be Fridays from 6:30p to 8p. Note that we will not have class in either section from October 14th through November 1st, with classes resuming on November 2nd.

Many thanks to Utada Kancho for visiting Davis and providing an outstanding weekend Aikido seminar series!! Thanks also to everyone who attended and contributed their focus and hard training to this event! We’re already looking forward to next year, please keep your schedules open around the same time for the 2012 Utada Kancho seminar series in Davis.
